good bye stinking first trimester.

...sorry about skipping a week, the couch needed me. here's what you missed wee-wise...

Week Twelve
  • Vocal cords begin to form
  • The eyes begin to move closer together
  • Ears shift to their normal place on the side of the head
  • Intestines move farther in to the body
  • The liver begins to function
  • The pancreas begins to produce insulin
  • Your baby's average size is now at a whopping length: 2.13 inches (5.4cm) and weight: 0.49 ounce (14gm)
***********************

Week Thirteen

  • Your infant is about 2.91 inches (7.4cm) and weighs around 0.81 ounce (23gm) - This is about the same weight as 4 quarters.
  • He/she begins to practice inhaling and exhaling movements
  • Eyes and ears continue to move and develop
  • Baby's neck is getting longer, and the chin no longer is resting on his chest
  • The hands are becoming more functional
  • At this point all nourishment is received from the placenta (hope the wee is enjoying the soy chicken patties)

this is a picture of i found of a 13 week fetus. this is not wee but it's still cute.

and with me:

i kicked off my first official day of the second trimester by going for a little run (~2.5 miles thanks so much which i think is not so bad considering i'm growing a person for the love of god)

then i treated myself to a mean bean tofu burrito. this did not result in as much pain as eating usually brings me.

then i took a nap with my nap satchel....

oh yes. a pretty good mostly nausea-free day........until later that night when the misery came back in full force. but hey, most of the day was good and today hasn't been too bad so far. i predict that the ick will be ending soon.

a less invasive ultrasound.

i love today. i went to the wee doctor for an ultrasound (external ultrasound thank you very much) with my super mama as herschel's stand in (thanks mom). we got to hear the heartbeat (~167 bpm) plus saw LOTS of movement. the wee is a wiggler and very good at it if i do say so myself. after seeing this i commenced crying (happily) for about 15 minutes, calmed down, called herschel, talked for about 4 seconds and then handed the phone over to mom as my crying plan was reinstated. despite my emotional breakdown, there are no words to describe my happiness right now.

they weren't able to get great pictures because wee was moving around so much but this is the best one....
i'll describe it. see if you can see it:
picture this...sicily...1932. golden girls reference, sorry. (berry would get it). anyway.
wee is lying on it's stomach, head towards the bottom right. you can also see spine and an arm and on the left there is a tiny foot.
sigh.

the doctor said that everything looked great, the heartbeat was strong and wee had a pretty spine ( i knew it would).

and:
on another happy note, i got some meds for nausea and sleeplessness. hooray for my mental state...which in turn is good for everyone around me. so hooray for you guys.

47.2 mm is ~1.8 inches = wee's current measurement. (still mostly forehead)

tiny toothbuds

Week Eleven

  • Nearly all structures and organs are formed and beginning to function.
  • Fingers and toes have separated (this is freaking precious in case you are dead inside and didn't realize it)
  • Hair and nails begin to grow
  • Tiny toothbuds are beginnning to appear under the gums
  • The genitals begin to take on the proper gender characteristics
  • Amniotic fluid begins to accumulate as the kidneys begin to function
  • The muscles in the intestinal walls begin to practice contractions that digest food.
  • Some of the bones are beginning to harden
  • Your baby is about 1.61 inches (4.1 cm) long and weighs 0.25 ounce (7gm).

if one were so inclined, they could compare wee baby to the width of an ipod shuffle but at half the weight....

on a side note:
apparently most women gain between 2-5 pounds during the first trimester -- don't know where i am as of yet but i guess i will find out monday at my next doc visit. maybe i will put a scale on the blog if it doesn't hurt my feelings too much. anyway, in a couple of weeks i can expect to start gaining about a pound a week. holy crap.

so stinking cute.

our wee is no longer a silly old embryo but is a bonafide fetus and so deserves some nifty pj's.
our baby's first fat pants...
